What is the 300 Visa?

The Prospective Marriage Visa is a temporary visa for individuals who are outside Australia and intend to marry their Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen fiancé(e).

  • Once granted, the visa is generally valid for 9 to 15 months, depending on your individual circumstances.

During this time, you can:

  • Enter and live in Australia.

  • Apply for an onshore Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) after your marriage.

  • Travel in and out of Australia while your visa remains valid.

Can You Work or Study?

Yes. Once your visa is granted, you can:

  • Work in Australia.

  • Study in Australia. However, you may not be eligible for government-funded student assistance or domestic tuition fees.

Can Family Members Be Included?

Yes. You may include eligible dependent children in your visa application either when you lodge your application or before a decision is made on your visa.

Am I Eligible for a 300 Visa?

You may be eligible for a Prospective Marriage (300) Visa if you meet the following:

  1. You’re in a genuine relationship
    Your fiancé(e) must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.

  2. You’ve met in person
    It's perfectly fine if you met online—but you must have met each other in person as adults before lodging your visa application. Relationships that exist only online do not meet the visa requirements.

  3. You intend to marry
    You must genuinely intend to marry your fiancé(e) before your Prospective Marriage Visa expires.

    You should be able to provide evidence of your plans to marry, such as correspondence with a celebrant, venue enquiries or bookings, wedding plans, or other supporting documents.

  4. You can prove your commitment
    The Department of Home Affairs will assess whether your relationship is genuine.

    Evidence may include:

    • Regular communication

    • Time spent together and travel records

    • Shared financial commitments (where applicable)

    • Photos together

    • Statements from family and friends
