407 Visa: Training Visa (Subclass 407)
The Training Visa (Subclass 407) allows applicants to participate in structured workplace-based training to improve their skills for registration, licensing, or professional development in their occupation.
At ThinkOz Migration Centre, we assist applicants across the main eligible training streams and provide end-to-end support for both applicants and sponsors.
What Are the 407 Visa Streams?
There are three training streams under the Subclass 407 visa:
1. Occupational Training for Registration
This stream is for applicants who need workplace-based training to obtain licensing or registration to work in their occupation in Australia or overseas.
2. Occupational Training to Improve Skills
This stream is designed for applicants undertaking structured workplace training to improve skills in their nominated occupation and enhance their career development.
3. Workplace-Based Occupational Training (Overseas Capacity Building)
This stream supports overseas-based training arrangements to build capacity in the applicant’s home country.
Not currently supported under ThinkOz Migration Centre services.
Who Can Apply for a 407 Visa?
To be eligible, you generally must:
Be nominated for an occupation listed in the relevant legislative instrument
Be at least 18 years of age
Have a genuine temporary intent to stay in Australia
Hold adequate health insurance
Have sufficient funds to support yourself
Meet English language requirements (Competent English, unless exempt)
Meet health and character requirements
Eligible family members can be included in your application. Dependants may have limited work rights depending on visa conditions.
Employer Sponsorship
To apply, you must be nominated by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor.
Individuals and sole traders cannot sponsor applicants under this visa
The sponsor must be approved by the Department of Home Affairs
We assist employers in preparing and lodging sponsorship applications and ensuring compliance with visa requirements.
Understanding the Training Streams
Occupational Training – Skills Development Stream
This stream is suitable for applicants seeking structured workplace training to improve skills in their nominated occupation.
You must show:
At least 12 months of relevant study or work experience in the past 24 months
A structured training plan developed by the sponsor
A minimum of 30 hours of structured training per week
Supervision by a suitably qualified trainer
Clearly defined training goals, tasks, and assessment methods
This stream is commonly used by applicants transitioning from:
Subclass 500 (Student visa)
Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate visa)
Subclass 417 / 462 (Working Holiday visas)
Occupational Training – Registration Stream
You must demonstrate:
Relevant qualifications and experience to undertake occupational training
A structured training plan linked to registration or licensing requirements
A formal letter or confirmation from a relevant regulatory body (where required) stating training is necessary for registration
This stream is suitable where workplace training is required to obtain professional registration in your occupation.
How Long Is the Visa Valid?
The Subclass 407 visa is generally granted for up to 2 years, depending on the length of the approved training program.
407 Visa Conditions
While holding a 407 visa, you must:
Only participate in the approved training program with your sponsor
Complete a minimum of 30 hours per week of structured training/work
Maintain approved health insurance
Comply with all visa conditions at all times
Dependants:
Your partner may have limited work rights
Dependent children may study in Australia
Processing Times
Processing times vary depending on individual circumstances and completeness of the application. Most applications take approximately 3–6 months.
If your current visa is expiring, you may be granted a Bridging Visa while your application is being processed.
