485 Visa: Temporary Graduate Visa

If you’re an international student who recently finished studying in Australia, the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa lets you live, work, and gain experience here for a limited time. It’s a great way to take the next step in your Australian journey.
Which stream should I apply for?
The 485 visa has two different streams based on what you studied:
Post-Vocational Education Work Stream
For diploma, trade, or associate degree graduates
You’ll apply under this stream if your course was vocational (e.g. trades, TAFE-level qualifications).
Your qualification must relate to an occupation on the Medium and Long-Term Skills List.
Age limit: 35 or under, except UK and Hong Kong passport holders, who can apply up to age 50.
Visa duration:
Most applicants: 18 months
UK and Hong Kong nationals: Up to 5 years
Post-Higher Education Work Stream
For Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD graduates
You’ll apply under this stream if you’ve completed a higher education degree in Australia.
Age limit: 35 or under (UK and Hong Kong passport holders can apply up to 50 for Master’s Research or PhDs)
Visa duration by qualification:
Bachelor’s degree (including honours): up to 2 years
Master’s degree (coursework or extended): up to 2 years
Master’s by research / PhD: up to 3 years
UK and Hong Kong nationals: up to 5 years
Special rules for Indian nationals
Thanks to the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA):
Bachelor’s degree (incl. honours): up to 2 years
Bachelor’s with First Class Honours in STEM (including ICT): up to 3 years
Master’s (all types): up to 3 years
Doctoral (PhD): up to 4 years
