408 Visa: Temporary Activity Visa – Sporting Activities Stream
At ThinkOz Migration Centre, we have helped many overseas sports coaches—from fencing instructors to equestrian and gymnastics coaches—secure their visas to work in Australia. We work closely with Australia’s leading sporting bodies to support their members throughout the visa process.
About the Sports Stream
The 408 Temporary Activity visa (Sports Stream) offers two options based on how long you want to stay in Australia:
3-month visa
2-year visa
Each has different eligibility requirements, and we’ve successfully managed applications for both elite athletes and sports coaches.
3 Month 408 Visa
To qualify, you need to:
Provide a letter of support from your sport’s peak governing body
Show you meet the criteria for your specific coaching or sporting role
Prove you’re a genuine temporary entrant to Australia
Demonstrate you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay
This visa starts from the day you arrive in Australia.
2 Year 408 Visa
For the longer stay, your sponsoring club or organisation must be an approved Temporary Activity Sponsor (TAS). You must also:
Show you have the skills to coach or instruct at a high level
Lodge your application either inside or outside Australia (you can apply while holding a 3-month 408 visa)
Have appropriate health insurance
Meet character requirements (such as police checks)
Possibly complete English language and medical tests
This visa can be renewed once onshore for an additional two years.
Can Family Members Join You?
Yes. Some family members and dependents can be included in your application or added later. Your partner on a 408 dependent visa can work full time in Australia.
