407 Visa: Training Visa (Subclass 407)

The Training Visa (Subclass 407) allows you to take part in structured workplace training to improve your skills for registration, licensing, or professional development in your field.

At ThinkOz Migration Centre, we assist applicants in two of the three training streams:

  • Occupational Training for Registration

  • Occupational Training to Improve Skills

What Are the 407 Visa Streams?

There are three training streams under the 407 visa:

1. Training for Registration

This stream supports applicants who need to complete workplace-based training to meet licensing or registration requirements in Australia.

2. Occupational Skills Development

This stream is designed to help you improve your skills through structured workplace training in an eligible occupation.

3. Capacity Building Overseas

Not managed by ThinkOz Migration Centre.

Understanding the Training Streams

Skills Development Stream

Ideal if you’ve recently studied or worked in your nominated occupation.

You must show:

  • You’ve studied or worked full-time for at least 12 months in the last 2 years in the nominated occupation

  • Your employer has created a structured training plan to develop your skills

The training plan must include:

  • A breakdown of practical tasks, instruction, and observation

  • Timelines, goals, and the skills you aim to build

  • An assessment of your current skill level

  • Training by someone with relevant qualifications

  • A minimum of 30 hours of training per week

This stream suits applicants coming from:

  • Student visas (subclass 500)

  • Graduate visas (subclass 485)

  • Working holiday visas (417 or 462) with relevant qualifications or experience

Registration Stream

You’ll need:

  • The qualifications and experience to begin occupational training

  • A training plan that meets licensing or registration body requirements in your field

  • A letter from the relevant Australian or overseas regulatory body confirming that the training is needed to obtain registration or licensing

This is the right stream if you need to complete on-the-job training to gain registration in your occupation.

How Long Is the Visa Valid?

The 407 visa is granted for a period of 6 months to 2 years, depending on how long it takes to complete your training.

You may be eligible for another visa once your 407 visa ends.

407 Visa Conditions

  • Minimum of 30 hours of work/training per week

  • Must be paid at least the Award pay rate for your nominated role

  • Your dependent partner can work up to 40 hours per fortnight
